rainbow_goddess @ 04:12 pm: This is making me REALLY cranky
I do a lot of transcription as well as editing, and normally this particular client sends me audio or video files to transcribe. This time, however, I was sent a Word document that I was told was the transcript of the video file I normally transcribe. I was asked to simply edit and format it.

Well, I just opened this document, and the first thing I noticed was "Holy wall of text, Batman!" Five pages with absolutely NO punctuation and no paragraph breaks. Oh well, I can deal with that.

Then I started to read it. I have come to the realization that they must have used speech-recognition software to make this transcript, because it makes absolutely no sense. None. Either that, or someone for whom English is not a first language transcribed it. Let me give you a few examples:

"Press them into an all time it with that in mind the euro on Friday yes and no time to sing to thee."

"I work with the above either well Hemingway you have to do the will to win."

"I'm also running another face to face Christians both my big toe shoes leave them some other courses for her."

I was going to try to work these into sentences, even if they made no sense, but I think I'll just e-mail my client on Tuesday (Monday is a holiday) and ask them to please send me the video file and let me transcribe it. I'll give them some of those excerpts so that they can see what they've asked me to work with.

NFW. I just started doing transcription work and I can't even imagine dealing with that.

I gotta say, though, "both my big toe shoes" is almost poetry. Do those fridge-poetry-magnet people make voice-recognition software?

OMG. Speech-recognition software has SUCH a long way to go!

Someone thought they'd save some money by using software instead of a person. I hope this teaches them why that's such a terrible idea. :-/

I think I'll hang on to this file in case anyone else ever suggests they can save money by using speech-recognition software instead of human transcribers.

Definitely do that! I used to have to have this argument all the time at my old job. "Hey, we could replace you with software!" "Only if you think I suck like THIS." "Oh. Uh... oh. No, uh... Oh."

I can't imagine how you could possibly take these streams of non-consciousness and turn them into sentences. Or, okay, I can, but there's no reason to believe your version would resemble the original things that were said, because you have NOTHING to go on. Ugh. I'm sorry.
